The article presents information on developmental disabilities, by citing a case report of a patient. Developmental disabilities are chronic neurologic handicaps in which abnormal brain development occurs secondary to genetic, intrauterine, infectious, toxic, metabolic, and traumatic insults that affect diverse central nervous system functions. Clinical manifestations reflect the distribution and degree of such brain malformation or damage. The disability continuum for children with milder developmental disorders often contains a preponderance of behavioral and psychiatric problems. Appropriate educational placement may serve as only the starting point for a child with a learning disability. |
