Abstrakt: We report on petroleum asphalt–based porous carbons with high textural characteristics, CO2/N2 adsorption capacity and selectivity. A series of samples was prepared by a two-stage method, including preliminary heat treatment of asphalt at 450°C and KOH activation. The activation temperature varied from 700 to 900°C. Correlation between the porous structure and adsorption properties of asphalt-based porous carbons on the activation temperature was obtained. The activation temperature of petroleum asphalt has a significant effect on the porous structure of the activated carbon materials. Thus, exclusively microporous sample is formed at the temperature of 700 °С. An increase in the activation temperature to 800°C leads to the formation of mesopores. The decrease in textural characteristics due to the formation of more stable carbon structures to gasification reactions takes place at a temperature of 900 °С. In addition, the adsorption capacity of CO2 was measured for carbon samples. The porous carbon activated at 700 °C and derived from petroleum asphalt exhibited high CО2 adsorption capacity of 6.3 mmol/g at 0 °C and 1 atm and good selectivity for CO2 over N2, indicating possible applications in CO2 capture technology.
