Neoliberalism has brought the re-privatization and intensification of reproductive labor in the United States. At the same time, the neoliberal state has become more invested in spurring the development of corporate scientific and technological innovations, which are understood as undergirding prosperity and providing solutions to myriad problems. This article argues that the discourse of innovation has helped to justify many neoliberal reforms and constitutes a component of neoliberal rationality. Furthermore, the article theorizes the innovation/reproduction binary to argue that the neoliberal overvaluation of innovation contributes to the continued devaluation of reproductive labor.
