Reading postcolonial literature for animism provides a significant and original perspective on dealing with trauma outside cultures that put humans at the centre of the experience. Jay Rajiva's I Toward an Animist Reading of Postcolonial Trauma Literature i (2021) analyses the representation of trauma in contemporary Nigerian and Indian literature by invoking animism. These texts invoke animist beliefs and reinterpret animist thought to provide an alternative framework for understanding and surviving trauma produced by disparate trauma-producing systems such as poverty, gendered violence, and neo-colonial exploitation.
