We have found predictable changes in the morphology and rheology of surface microvessels in some rheumatic disease entities. We believe that these changes are related to changes in plasma proteins and the presence of antibody-antigen complexes. It seems immaterial whether such antibody formation is based on autoimmunity or induced by exogenous factors or agents. We postulate that in this group of diseases the diversity of clinical manifestations and the varying involvement of several to almost all organ systems might be due to a primary microangitis.
