However, an uncanny feeling that the future is being produced and decided by few people still dominates the analysis and study of "critical futures" and much STS-analysis of the future ([113]; [106]). With the uncertainty of the future comes a social preoccupation over our futures, as images of the future tend to present us with "glaring uncertainties" and "unintentional consequences" making us uneasy and peaking our interest in making sense of the future ([25]). We are adamant that critical futures scholars should not predict the future, but center the "future" as an important object of inquiry through individual and collective images of the future ([17]; [25]; [109]). The purpose of this special issue is to bring into conversation the ideas and understandings from two intellectual communities: researchers in Future Studies (FTS) and scholars in Science and Technology Studies (STS).
