Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emissions generated when different materials deform plastically were confirmed and explored by several researchers in their study. The emission becomes essential as its qualitative and quantitative assessment would give a more outstanding picture of the complex physics involved during deformation,crack propagation and fracture phenomena. It becomes of paramount importance to keep the demand for new materials. Evolutionary advances in instrumentations may help in this endeavour. This article presents a great deal in understanding this phenomenon both experimentally and theoretically. The future direction of research and challenges in this field has been proposed.
