Abstrakt: Effects of a static magnetic field (SMF), a pulsed current (PC) and the combination of the two (CEF) on microstructure and mechanical properties of a horizontal twin-roll cast 4045 alloy are investigated. The SMF makes some of the α-Al dendrites spheric and eutectic Si laminas thinner but still continuous by the thermoelectric magnetic convection effect. The ductility is the lowest but strength is the highest under this condition. In the PC strip, the α-Al dendrites become longer and straighter and the primary and secondary arms become isolated spheres. The eutectic Si laminas become thinner and no longer connect to each other. As a result, the ductility increases and strength decreases compared with the non-field and SMF condition. The electromagnetic oscillation in 4045 melt caused by CEF makes nodulizing of the α-Al dendrites more obvious than PC condition. Combined with the fractured and thin Si laminas, the strength of the CEF strip is near the SMF condition and its ductility is higher than the non-field condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
