The treatment of heavy metal ions in wastewater received wide attention among researchers. This study investigates the performance of coconut shell based activated carbon (CSAC) as adsorbent for adsorption of Cu2+ ions from aqueous solution. The coconut shell was activated via microwave irradiation technique under carbon dioxide gas flow. CSAC poses high BET surface area and total pore volume with pores are mesoporous in nature. Surface of CSAC consists of several functional groups such as alcohol, nitrile, alkene, alkyne, aldehyde and carboxylic. The removal of Cu2+ was noticed to decrease from 75.20% to 62.27% as the initial concentration increased from 1 to 10 mg/L. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first order (PFO) models were found to represent equilibrium and kinetic studies of CSAC-Cu system, respectively. The monolayer adsorption capacity of CSAC, Qm was found at 12.80 mg/g. The applicability of the CSAC was confirmed as good adsorbent for Cu2+ removal from aqueous solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
