The use of corrosion inhibitors for aluminium in an acidic medium is proven to be effective to reduce the corrosion effect of aggressive environment on aluminium and its alloys. However, the toxicity and harms posed by organic inhibitors has drawn attention to substitute greener and safer inhibitors derived from plants. Hence, the inhibitive ability of Dillenia suffruticosa on aluminium corrosion in 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been evaluated by using measurement weight loss technique. The effects of various process parameters namely inhibitor concentration, immersion time, and temperature on inhibition efficiency were thoroughly discussed. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses proved that the ability of D. suffruticosa leaves extract in inhibiting corrosion was contributed by the presence of heteroatoms and π electrons in the structure of bioactive compounds in the extract. The corrosion test revealed that D. suffruticosa leaves extract served as a good corrosion inhibitor for aluminium in HCl, where 80.79 ± 2.54 % of corrosion inhibition was achieved at the maximum concentration of 0.8 g/L at 30 °C in 2 hours of immersion time. Linear plot of Langmuir adsorption isotherm confirmed that the monolayer adsorption D. suffruticosa leaves extract on aluminium surface has contributed to the corrosion inhibition effect of the extract for aluminium in HCl. The findings obtained show that D. suffruticosa leaves extract has the ability to inhibit corrosion of aluminium in hydrochloric acid solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
