Abstrakt: The jumping aluminum foil strip demonstration in this paper represents a variation to the jumping wire demonstration commonly used in the physics classroom to illustrate the concept of the force on a wire in a magnetic field given by F = i L × B. The demonstration provides a dramatic deflection of an aluminum foil strip that is easily repeatable, and students can readily visualize the direction of the force vector as a result of the current and magnetic field vectors when compared with the commonly used jumping wire demonstration. Drawing on the benefits of physics demonstrations, the case is made that these demonstrations may be effectively used in a constructivist physics classroom to probe for student physics understanding by incorporating a predict-observe-explain (POE) teaching strategy. This paper provides students an innovative opportunity to observe electromagnetic phenomenon, while determining the vector relationships between the variables involved by combining a POE teaching strategy with the jumping aluminum foil strip demonstration.
