[Tyial design] This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study aimed to evaluate the effects of food containing Epilobium angustifolium extract on quality of life (QOL) related to nocturnal urination. [Method] Fifty-five healthy participants were enrolled in this study and randomly assigned to three groups The two experimental groups ingested food that contained either a high-dose (containing 30 mg oenothein B) or low-dose (15 mg oenothein B) of E. angustifolium extract, whereas the third group ingested a placebo (food devoid of E. angustifolium extract). The study was conducted over an 8-week period. Primaiy (visual analog scale [VAS] questionnaire on QOL related to nocturnal urination) and secondary (nocturnal awakening time and questionnaire on bodily sensations) outcomes were evaluated prior to the commencement of the study with experimental food. These outcomes were again investigated at 4 and 8 weeks after the start of the experimental diet. [Results] The high dose group displayed a significant decrease in VAS scores relating to: "discomfort that wakes you up at night to go to the toilet" (p < 0.05), when compared to those of the placebo group. Both experimental groups (high-dose and low-dose) displayed a significant decrease in nocturnal awakening time (p< 0.05) compared to the placebo group. No adverse effects were observed after ingestion of the experimental food. [Conclusion] Overall, these findings indicate that foods containing E. angustifolium extract can improve the QOL related to nocturnal urination and nocturnal awakening time in healthy individuals.
