The article presents information on the mechanisms of action of antiarrhythmic drugs relative to the origin and perpetuation of cardiac arrhythmias. In the article, the focus is on two antiarrhythmic properties and their interactions: prolongation of repolarization in atrial and ventrictilar muscle, and the modulation of their electrophysiologic properties by antiadrenergic mechanisms. The emphasis will be on the overall mode of action of compounds with such dual properties in the context of their clinical utility in an era of expanding interventional procedures and the use of implantable devices. |
