Abstrakt: Eddies behind headlands and islands may contribute to increased aggregation and dispersion of organisms. A regional numerical model is used for the first time to associate tidal currents with structures detected in a coastal region of Patagonia, using optical and microwave images. Vortex diameter, vortex distance to its point of origin, and separation of vortices in a vortex dipole, do not exceed 10 km. In addition, CTD profiles are analysed to detect the influence of an island in the dynamics. A slight influence in the lee of the island was observed in spring 2017. A dimensionless parameter considering the size of the island and the intensity of local tidal currents suggests that instabilities as eddies could be shed from the lee of the island.
