Effect of titanium addition on the physicochemical properties and catalytic behaviour of functionalized mesoporous silica.

Abstrakt: Titanium-containing organic-functionalized mesoporous silica (Ti-OFMS) having different titanium loadings was successfully prepared by direct synthesis and characterized using XRD, FTIR and UV-Vis DR. XRD data show that all prepared Ti-OFMS have similar XRD pattern as mesoporous MCM-41 indicating that titanium can be introduced without destroying the pore structure of mesoporous silica. The FTIR spectra suggested that the organosilane functional group still retaining in the pore channels of Ti-OFMS even after being calcined at 550°C. The presence of tetrahedrally coordinated titanium ions in the prepared Ti-OFMS was confirmed from an absorption band at 210-230 nm in UV-Vis DR spectra. Catalytic activities of Ti-OFMS were tested in the liquid-phase epoxidation of 1-octene in the presence of aqueous H2O2 oxidant. The catalyst was found to be highly active in the epoxidation of 1-octene to 1,2-epoxyoctane giving 73% conversion and 42% selectivity due to the presence of oxidative titanium active sites and improved characteristics of hydrophobic catalyst.
