Youth in Pasir Gudang has a risk to face ethnic conflict in the future as Pasir Gudang itself has ethnic conflict history and instability in its governance management. This article focuses on bonding social capital to measure the cross-ethnic relation among youth in Pasir Gudang, Johor. Bonding social capital refers to the relation between youth and another ethnic in the Pasir Gudang community. This study applied a survey method to distribute a set of questionnaires to 400 youth (Malay 60%, Chinese 25%, and Indian 155) in Pasir Gudang, Johor. The respondent is chosen by using a stratified sampling method according to their Rukun Tetangga association in the Pasir Gudang community. Data were obtained from the questionnaire distribution analyzed using SPSS version 23. The overall result shows that bonding social capital is moderately developed in Pasir Gudang. Still, the bonding among Chinese youth is growing, followed by Indian youth and the Malay youth. Results also showed the Chinese youth are in the first place regarding the trust, but Indian youth is lead in cohesive and reciprocity element. Malay youth have low bonding social capital through the trust element because it is linked to the religious matter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
