Fibrinolytic therapy for thrombosis is effective in dissolution of the thrombus when started early and administered in adequate dosage. Its effect is probably increased by heparin and possibly by anticoagulants but the dangers of treatment arc also increased. The use of finis therapeutic agent is limited by its great expense. Undesirable side reactions still occur but they are now very infrequent and minimal compared with the therapeutic effects. The treatment of venous and peripheral arterial thrombosis, and pulmonary embolus can be carried out safely and effectively in the usual general hospital, if the recommended precautions are used. At the present time cerebral and coronary thrombosis are conditions which should be approached with special precautions only by the expert. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
