Role of nucleating agent on molecular orientation of polypropylene crystallized under flow field.

Abstrakt: Crystallization behavior after shear of a commercially available polypropylene and the effect of a fibrous nucleating agent were investigated using an optical microscope under crossed polars attached with a parallel-plate. Under the flow at a low shear rate, the nucleating agent enhanced the crystallization rate to a great extent. As a result, the molecule alignment to the flow direction reached a high level, which must be responsible for high modulus. This was attributed to the formation of a pseudo shish-kebab structure, in which the nucleating agent acted as shish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
