The heroic-comic poem The Gypsiad or the Camp of the Gypsies, which Ion Budai-Deleanu had completed in 1812, was long relegated to the bottom of a trunk, among other unpublished manuscripts. Only in 1868, on the initiative of Gheorghe Asachi, was that hidden treasure recovered and made available to the Romanian culture. In 1900, the work was published in volume, on the basis of the first variant of the text, in an edition which was, moreover, marred by errors and modifications of all kinds. In 1925 Gheorghe Cardaş edited the edition of the definitive variant, but with little respect for the integrity of the text. The first critical edition of the literary works of the Transylvanian poet was edited in 1974-1975 by Florea Fugariu; in 2011, edited by Gheorghe Chivu and Eugen Pavel, the complete edition of his works finally came out. The interest of the critics was alternating and only in the last thirty years they have studied Budai-Deleanu's masterpiece with greater diligence and better results. Outside the Romanian borders, only in the second half of the twentieth century did they appear, translated into various languages, fragments of The Gypsiad; after the first translation into Czech, published in 1972, a translation of the full edition of the poem has been released in 2003 in France (reprinted at the end of 2014), in 2015 in Italy.
