Introduction: FUNAAB ALPHA is a recently registered Improved Indigenous Nigerian Chicken that needs rapid propagation to maximize it potential. The aim of the study was to determine suitable and readily accessible extender for FUNAAB ALPHA. Methods: Twelve semen samples were collected randomly from 6 cocks (2 cocks from each strain). The semen was evaluated at room temperature for suitability of plants and egg-yolk based semen extenders. Pre-extension and post-extension semen parameters were measurement at 0, 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 24 hours after extension using standard methods. Extenders used were egg yolk-citrate (control), egg yolk-Lactated Ringers, egg yolk-normal saline, egg yolk-dextrose saline, mango juice-citrate, coconut water-citrate and coconut milk-citrate. Data collected were subjected to descriptive statistics and mean were analyze by ANOVA. Significant differences in mean were considered at p<0.05. Results: Pre extended semen volume, progressive sperm motility scores, Sperm Concentration, Percentage Morphological abnormality and percentage sperm liveability were not significantly different across strains. Post extension evaluation revealed non-statistically different semen parameters across semen pull. However, across extenders, sperm viability was better kept by egg yolk-citrate and egg yolk-normal saline extenders for 24 hours post extension in all the strains. Significance: Generally, spermatozoa motility decreased progressively with time in both plant based and egg-yolk based extenders irrespective of the strain, but the egg-yolk based extenders were better compare to plant based. The study recommends the use of egg yolk based extender specifically egg yolk citrate and egg yolk-normal saline for the propagation of the FUNAAB Alpha breed of chicken. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
