The ethanolic neem leaf extract nanochitosan (ENLEN) effect on sprague dawley rats sperm morphology.

Abstrakt: Neem leaf extract has been used as anti-fertility agent, but our previous study showed that there was some variation affect to mammals when giving orally. This variation may be caused by the particles size which cannot across blood-tissue barrier. This study was designed to evaluate the ENLEN effect on the rats fertility which expressed by sperm morphology. Twenty male rats as laboratory animals was divided into 4 groups, i.e. control (C) which treated by water only; positive control (C+) which treated by the main solvent of nanoparticles (Na-TPP and chitosan); P1 and P2 groups which treated by ENLEN with 1: 0,5 and 1:1 in proportion between main solvent and the ethanolic neem leaf extract. The rats were treated for 28 days orally and sacrificed at the day after the last treatment. The sperm were isolated from the caudal of epididymis. Our result show there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the abnormality of sperm morphology between treated compared to control groups, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between positive control compared to P1 group. It could be concluded that the ENLEN has high potency in affecting the rat fertility by decreasing the normal sperm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
