Characteristics of chemical hydrolysis pretreatment and cellulolytic enzymes in the processing of oil palm frond waste as a source of fiber for ruminant feed.

Abstrakt: The availability of fiber sources in the environment is very abundant, one of which is oil palm frond waste. The fiber source still needs to be improved through pretreatment technology for ruminant feed utilization. It's main consist of carbohydrate fractions including cellulose and hemicellulose, and non-carbohydrate fractions such as lignin, ash and extractives. The objective of this research was to determine the characteristics of hydrolysis pretreatment using cellulose-forming chemicals and enzymes. This study was conducted in a completely randomized design with 6 treatments such as H2SO4, NaOH, ADS, NDS, commercial enzyme (CE), and enzyme A-292 and 5 replications with the hot extraction method of chemical treatment for 1 hour and 24 hours agitation incubation of cellulolytic enzymes. The results showed that both chemical and enzyme pretreatment gave a lower crystallinity (XRD Analysis) percentage compared to the control, except treatment with NDS. The NaOH and CE treatments had the lowest fiber fraction values compared to other treatments based on FTIR analysis. Crude protein and ether extract content were significantly different (P<0.05) the smallest from the other treatments. In conclusion, enzyme pretreatment gave the best characteristics in terms of its amorphous size and low crystallization which has the potential to increase the usability value of the fiber.
