Screening of antibiotic candidates from nine medicinal plants Jambi Province.

Abstrakt: Plants are an essential source of medicines for humans by utilizing several plant parts such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruit as a safe medicine in treating various diseases. Moreover, plants containing bioactive compounds have attracted increasing attention as traditional medicine. This study aims to find alternatives to control fungi, viruses, and bacteria from natural ingredients. So far, many types of plants have been used by tribes in Jambi Province as medicines and antiseptics. In addition to knowing the number and types of antiseptic medicinal plants used by tribes in Jambi Province. This study used survey methods, interviews, identification of plant species, and test of plant antiseptic activity in the laboratory. Our findings show that people in Mudung Laut Village traditionally use twelve types of plants that are common daily. From these twelve plants, we screened nine plants that have not been widely reported, namely Lawsonia inermis (LI), Peronema canescens (PC), Premna serratifolia (PS), Pluchea indica (PI), Melastoma candidum (MC), Clidemia hirta (CH), Areca vestiaria (AV), Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides (HS), Planchonia valida (PV), Cassia alata (CA), Acanthus ilicifolius (AI), Paederia foetida (PF), Sansevieria trifasciata (ST). The activity of PV extract was better than other plants, with an inhibition zone of 23.5 mm (very strong) against S. epidermidis and 17.1 mm (strong) against E. coli. It is suspected that the antibacterial compound in PV is the most effective in inhibiting bacteria and is interesting to study further. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
