Abstrakt: | Freeburg then transitions to a discussion of Frederick Douglass and the ways in which modern novelist Edward Jones and artist Radcliffe Bailey upend the traditional narrative of enslaved life through artistic expression. Freeburg maintains that Elkins's controversial thesis about the framework of plantation slavery was and continues to be much more influential to how scholars and artists represent the lives of enslaved people than many are willing to admit. Ultimately, Freeburg urges scholars who reflect on the enslaved experience to reject lenses prevalent in what he labels "slavery studies.". [Extracted from the article] |
