Shellum breathes new life into these men to varying degrees, but is most preoccupied with Young, the West Point-educated commander who has been the subject of Shellum's previous scholarship. In his introduction, Shellum notes that his work seeks to answer the question, "What was it like for African American officers to fight for the survival of Liberia in the early years of the twentieth century?" Shellum sets the stage for his recovery history of the officers' West African mission with a concise history of Liberia, the only African state to arise out of a Black, American settler-colonial project.
