Abstrakt: Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been extensively used in various biomedical, pharmaceutical, environmental and electronics applications. In the study, Ag NPs were facilely synthesized by a green method using Aloe Barbadensis Miller (Aloe vera) extract and AgNO3 using simple heat treatment. An aqueous Aloe vera peel extract acted as natural reducing agents of silver ions resulting in formation of Ag NPs without additional toxic chemicals. Instead of using hazardous chemicals, the use of plant extract has led to eco-friendly approach for the synthesis of Ag NPs. The ratio of AgNO3 and crude Aloe vera extract was varied from 8:2 to 2:8 by volume. The particle content, pH and UV-VIS characterization were used to prove the successful generation of Ag NPs. The Ag NPs synthesized at the ratio of 4:6 was achieved with the highest particle content of 8.7±0.37 mg/ml. To examine the antibacterial activity of Ag NPs, disc diffusion method was used to evaluate their antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus). The results revealed that the antimicrobial activity against E. coli by Ag NPs (ratio 8:2) was relatively greater than those of other ratios and Aloe vera extract. Meanwhile, the antimicrobial activity against S. aureus by Ag NPs was slightly higher than that of Aloe vera extract. The antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus was also evaluated after 4 months to determine the stability of Ag NPs. The Ag NPs kept for 4 months still revealed the similar antibacterial activity against both bacteria to those freshly prepared. The biosynthesis method of Ag NPs using Aloe vera peel extract is eco-friendly, low cost and efficient technique. The prepared Ag NPs can be exploited for their pharmaceutical usage as well as a large scale commercial production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
