Abstrakt: The plant-parasitic nematode is one of the biotic constraints in horticultural cultivation. Information on parasitic nematodes associated with papaya cultivation is still limited, with no study concerning this topic has been carried out in Indonesia. This study aims to diagnose and identify the plant-parasitic problem in papaya cultivation. A survey in papaya orchard at Agrotechnology Innovation Centre, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta was conducted during August-September 2021. Samples of rhizosphere soil and plant root were collected from two papaya cultivars (Merah Delima and California). Nematodes were extracted using Whitehead tray technique modification, and then identified based on morphological characters. Results showed six genera of plant-parasitic nematodes infected Carica papaya, namely Criconemoides, Helicotylenchus, Hoplolaimus, Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, and Xiphenema. The highest population was found on root sample, root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne spp. (386.7/5 g root on Merah Delima cultivar) and followed by spiral nematodes Helicotylenchus spp. in rhizosphere surrounding soil (56.7/100 g of soil surrounding California cultivar). This information may allow a further investigation to prevent more severe plant damages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
