The article reports that straight catheter and/or guide wire placement in the right ascending lumbar vein during percutaneous cannulation of the inferior vena cava happens in estimated 30% of cases. Prospectively, this estimate was confirmed in a study of 20 patients in whom the straight, 0.35-inch guide wire and catheter entered the ascending lumbar vein in seven cases. The position of the straight catheter was confirmed by fluoroscopy, test injection, and filming before cavography. It is reported that because of its anatomic origin and cephalad course, the right ascending lumbar vein accepts a straight guide wire very readily. |
