Certain systemic diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, collagen disease, and essential hypertensive cardiovascular disease, are usually reflected in both the retinal and cerebral circulations. Again, certain cerebral conditions, such as toxoplasmosis, are usually reflected in changes affecting the retinal circulation. Other conditions, such as cerebral embolism and cerebral hemorrhage, when caused by such systemic conditions as diabetes, purpura, leukemia, and bead trauma, are also commonly associated with similar changes in the retinal circulation. Other conditions affecting the cerebral circulation are not commonly reflected in the retinal vessels. The anatomical variations of circulatory supply to the retina and cerebrum, as well as the local variations that are known to occur even in systemic diseases involving the circulation, would appear to explain the lack of correlation which has .so frequently been noted.
