The article focuses on qualities and skills that go towards making a good learning disability nurse. Focus groups were also run for groups representing children's services, mainstream health services, mental health and ethnic minorities support groups. Since the 1971 Better services for the Mentally Handicapped White Paper much has been written and debated about whom is best placed to care for people who have a learning disability. The assertion from this group that people need to be more interested in the person they are caring for suggests they need to go back to their roots as nurses and reflect on the fundamental aims of nursing. |
