The article presents a study conducted by the authors to identify bacterial flora present in chronic stasis ulcers of legs and define their role in preventing proper healing and to test the efficacy of Debrisan in controlling infection and in local assistance to heal leg stasis ulcers. Thirty leg ulcers in 18 adult patients ranging in age between 26 and 75 years were studied. A number of parameters characterizing the ulcers were observed and noted. These included the size of the ulcers, local erythema, adjacent swelling, edema of the involved leg, the extent and volume of drainage, and the presence of pain and odor. The results showed that leg ulcers are usually infected with at least one bacterial species and often with a mixed bacterial flora. In addition, we were able to determine with the use of Debrisan that simple cleansing of the ulcer reduces the colony counts to levels which can be handled by the patient's own defenses. |
