Study was conducted to detect the presence of Multi Drug resistant Enterococcus species in rural-urban landscape along river Ganga in northern India at Prayagraj District, Uttar Pradesh, India. The study revealed that the water was found to be contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium species. The obtained isolates were found to be resistant for 10 antibiotics viz. Rifampicin, Gentamycin, Vancomycin, Streptomycin, Oxacillin etc. Resistance in Enterococci against these antibiotics may cause serious health hazards to the human beings. Constant monitoring of the antibiotic resistant profiles of Enterococci in ground and recreational water sources could provide a comprehensive data of the resistant patterns of these pathogens in the area. This would improve information on treatment options for Enterococcal infections in humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
