Abstrakt: Molecular diagnostics based identification of COVID-19 positive individuals is proving to be tricky and challenging. COVID-19 positive individual’s identification by using RT PCR analysis was done for symptomatic individuals suspected for COVID-19 in a tertiary hospital setting over a period of 6 months period from June to November 2021. A total of 2251 samples were analysed for COVID-19 disease and this includes a total of 1386 males and 865 females. A total of 64 doctors, 99 staff, 204 patient attenders and 4 CRRI involved in the COVID-19 duty in VMCH&RI with positive symptoms were analysed using Real time PCR. A total of two swabs including one from nasal and the other throat sample using swab were collected for COVID-19 analysis. The samples collected in the Hiviral transport medium - Himedia are processed by using Qia amp 96 virus Kit (Qiagen) and analysed by using Rotor-Gene Q MDx (Qiagen) PCR machine following manufactures instructions. A total of 608 (27 %) individuals were found to be positive for COVID-19 using RT-PCR. Among the COVID-19 positive individuals 418 (69 %) are accounted by males and 190 (31%) are accounted by females. About 366 (60%) of the individuals tested positive for COVID-19 are above 60 years of age and 242 (40 %) of the individuals were below 60 years of age. The results showed the increased susceptibility of males and individuals above 60 years of age to the COVID-19 disease even though the associations are statistically insignificant.
