In this study, the possible toxic effects of prolonged administration of metanil yellow (MY) was tested. Adult male albino rats were orally administered with MY (@250 mg/kg bw) only as well as along with garlic and turmeric extract (@250 mg/kg bw) for 12 and 24 weeks. After administration of doses of MY alone and along with herbal extracts body weight gain (BWG%), serum protein, albumin, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured. Our results show that oral administration of MY increased ALP and decreased protein and albumin levels in serum (P = 0.05) when compared with control. BWG was also less in MY-induced rats in comparison to control. Garlic and turmeric extracts were tested to mitigate the toxicity caused by MY. BWG as well as level of serum total protein, albumin, and ALP were improved in both experimental groups, in which MY was given in combination with herbal extracts. It could be concluded that the MY administration could impair serological parameters. Moreover, garlic and turmeric extract is able to ameliorate the toxic effect of MY on liver function of albino rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
