The article focuses on the incidence and origins of surgical wound infection. The overwhelming problem is the people who enter the hospitals with staphylococcal infection. Many are diabetics and patients with peripheral vascular disease. Despite apparent improvement in the control of wound infection, much can still he done to create a more hygienic environment, to encourage the surgeon to think more about the tissue he is dealing with as it relates to the hazard of infection. With contaminated wounds, one should anticipate infection and not be lulled into security by distance from infection. |
