Abstrakt: Tranquilizers are unique sedatives having high therapeutic indices. They are distinguishable from older sedatives chiefly by their lack of cerebral depressant action and greater latitude of dosage application. There is some evidence that they have curative properties but their primary action appears to be a nonspecific inhibition of anxiety, agitation and/or aggression. The value of tranquilizers in the treatment of patients with cardiac and vascular disease depends on the individual case. If chemical sedation is required, tranquilizers permit quantitatively greater sedation without hypnotic effects than is possible with previously known, sedatives. Successful tranquilizer therapy in cardiac and vascular disease, as in all other disease categories, depends on proper selection of patients, scaling of dosage to the needs of the patient and setting of reasonable therapeutic goals.
