Abstrakt: This study examines how the timing of salary negotiations contributes to the gender pay gap in academia. Using survey data from a public research university in the United States, we demonstrate that women faculty are indeed paid significantly less than their male counterparts. We also show that women faculty are actually more likely to engage in salary negotiations at the outset of their careers but that their greater relative tendency to negotiate disappears entirely by the time of tenure, which we attribute to familial obligations and other pressures that limit their ability to seek competing offers. Finally, and critically, the results indicate that only negotiations at the stage of tenure have a meaningful impact on professors' salaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
