The article discusses therapeutic aspects of hypertension. Hypertension is the most ubiquitous of all the cardiovascular disorders in the United States. The morbidity and mortality risks associated with this disorder are roughly proportionate to the level of blood pressure elevation; but regardless of severity, there are few individuals with sustained hypertension whose well being and life span are not adversely affected, either directly or indirectly. Useful adjunctive measures in the ambulatory patient with diastolic hypertension include dietary salt restriction, rest and sedation, weight reduction in the obese patient and elimination of smoking. |
