Subgrade is a major component in determining the stability of the pavement. Soil in the subgrade takes the load of the pavement. When the soil in subgrade do not have adequate strength the failure occurs in pavement. Soil reinforcement is considered as one of the commonly used method for improving the soils. Geotextiles, geogrid sheets, Geomembranes and natural fibers have been used as reinforcing materials to soil. Natural fiber are used for improving soil properties. Using these in soil iseconomical, and these are locally available and are environmental friendly. Study on improvement of strength of subgrade by reinforcing the sample soil with natural jute, coir and sisal fibers. Locally available BC soil is selectedand classified based on index properties. It was found that the soil is CH(Highly compressible clay). Fibre content (jute, sisal & coir) were mixed withBC soil in different percentage like 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.25%, 1.00% of length of 5-10 mm to obtain the optimum percentage where the maximum strength is observed in CBR test. It was observed that maximum bearing capacity of soil is obtained with 0.50% of fibre content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
