It has been shown, based on laboratory experience, that sodium allopurinol is effective in abolishing digitalis induced cardiac toxicities. The mechanisms have been postulated and further studies are underway to elucidate those phenomena. Reversal of what appeared to be defects in potassium transport, metabolism of glucose and oxygen utilization are strongly suggestive that allopurinol has a direct role in improving cellular metabolism in the myocardium following digitalis toxicity.
