Green roofs have experienced an exponential interest for research in the past few decades in our attempts to attenuate the energy requirements of buildings to keep the interiors cool and comfortable. This review work is divided in two parts; the basic introduction of green roofs and evapotranspiration in them. This paper also intends to highlight the deficiency in research work with a perspective of India's climate and local vegetation. All major studies before are performed outside India in accordance with foreign climate and with the respective local vegetation. More studies need to be performed in India with its local vegetation taken into account. Another aspect pertaining to the modern cities' increased need for air conditioning is the effect of Urban Heat Islands (UHI). Utilizing the concept of green roofs is an excellent method to decrease the cooling required in the buildings by reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the surface of the buildings. Most of the benefits of GRs are mainly due to the cooling effect by Evapotranspiration (ET) which is basically evaporation (of water) and transpiration (a process carried out by plants). ET contributes towards the humidification process of the external ambient air. It reduces the surface temperature of the roof and helps to mitigate the urban heat island phenomenon.
