Atherosclerotic changes of the abdominal aorta and the common iliacs observed roentgenologically in clinically suspected atherosclerosis were correlated with postmortem findings in 367 patients. In every instance of positive roentgenologic involvement of the abdominal aorta, postmortem examination confirmed the presence of atherosclerosis. However, negative roentgenologic findings did not rule out the presence of the disease. It is very rare to find atherosclerosis obliterans irrespective of site without involvement of the abdominal aorta. This simple x-ray examination is, therefore, recommended as an additional and useful means for the antemortem diagnosis of atherosclerosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
