The objective of this research was to study the drying characteristics of corn kernels (Zea Mays) using a vertical dryer. The method used in this study is an experimental using two treatment methods, namely continuous and discontinuous. The continuous method is drying the material by turning on the heat continuously while the discontinuous method is drying the material using a dryer where the heat source is turned on for 1 hour and off for 30 minutes. This method is repeated until the material reaches a moisture content of 14%. The materials used in this study were corn kernels with mass variations of 30 kg, 40 kg and 50 kg. The air temperatures used in drying corn are 45℃, 50℃ and 55℃ with hot air velocity 7 m/s which is kept constant. The results show that with an initial moisture content of corn kernel was about 19-21%, the final water content of 13.7-14.1% was obtained. The drying rate of corn in a vertical dryer is a decreasing drying rate, where the drying rate of corn is greatest at a mass of 30 kg and a temperature of 55 ° C. Furthermore, the drying rate is lowest at a drying condition of 50 kg corn mass and a drying temperature of 45 ° C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
