The purpose is to characterize the influence of the policy of the Russian imperial government on the development of Ukrainian sericulture in the 18th century. The research methodology is based on the principles of impartiality and determinism, with the use of general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, analogy, abstraction, and generalization, as well as a problemchronological approach. The scientific novelty. For the first time, the formation and development of national sericulture are analyzed in comparison with similar processes in Russia, and the destructive role of the imperial government in this process is also characterized. Conclusions. It has been proven that during the 18th century, regardless of all the (often violent) attempts of the tsar to force Ukrainians to engage in this branch of production massively, the desired results were not achieved: the import of silk continued to dominate over the export, and the quality of exported products remained poor.
