Benzoic acid is an important compound contained in benzoin which is obtained from the bark of Sumatran Frankincense (Styrax benzoin). Benzoic acid is used for several purposes such as food preservatives, flavor or aroma enhancers, pH regulators, and other purposes in pharmaceuticals. This study aims to isolate and identify benzoic acid compounds from incense gum to ascertain whether there are differences in benzoic acid levels from incense resin from different regions in North Sumatra, namely North Tapanuli Regency and Humbang Hasundutan Regency. The research was carried out starting from sample preparation, refluxing using ethanol followed by extraction using diethyl ether solvent, purification pure benzoic acid content, and qualitative quantitative analysis. The results showed that benzoic acid was extracted to produce pure compounds (99.27%). The presence of C=O, C-O, C-H, O-H and C-C aromatic functional groups in the benzoic acid compound were identified. The concentration of benzoic acid in incense resin from different area are found differently that can be used as a parameter for quality of the Styrax to be used to choose mother plant for plant propagation.
