Abstrakt: For detecting certain substances at airport security controls or customs inspections, a novel polymer optical fibre (POF) based approach is being presented. The POF cladding is doped with silicon quantum dots (SiQD) which are chemically sensitized to deactivate their fluorescent behaviour upon contact with a specific substance, in this case trinitrotoluene (TNT). This causes the illuminated POF to change its emitted intensity and spectrum which allows potential hazardous substances to be detected without further analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
