Bearings of improved wear resistance are developed by optimizing the surface properties of workpieces. Specifically, optimization establishes beneficial compressive residual stress; increases the material's thermal conductivity and capacity by storing heat in successive melting and solidification of the fusible components; and improves the damping properties so as to increase the wear resistance and decrease the frictional coefficient.
