We studied the extraction ability of derivatives of hydrazine and α-branched tertiary carboxylic (versatic) acids of fractions C15–C19 (hydrazides C15–C19) in relation to rare earth metal (REM) ions Y, La, Nd, Ce, Sm, Gd, Ho, Er, and Yb in sulfuric acid media. The hydrazides of C15–C19α-branched tertiary carboxylic acids have been shown to be excellent extractants that are selective for light and medium lanthanides. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration and presence of impurity ions (Fe3+, Al3+, Ca2+, etc.) on the efficiency of lanthanide extraction was established. The extraction conditions were confirmed by the data on extraction of lanthanide ions from a model leaching solution in a laboratory counter-current cascade of extractors. The investigated reagent is promising for extraction of light REMs because it allows for the group separation of light and heavy REMs, and provides effective separation of light REMs from impurities such as iron, phosphorus, and aluminum.
