The fundamental possibility of monitoring the mechanical state of the windings of a high-voltage power transformer using only one stage of the diagnostic procedure—a probing pulse—has been established. It is shown that the "lodging of conductors" winding defect is determined by spectral analysis of the probing pulse applied to the winding under examination. The results of probing-pulse analysis make it possible to control the degree of defect development. Experiments performed for various probing-pulse lengths in the range of 20—520 ns made it possible to establish the optimal duration in terms of the efficiency of defect detection, which is in the region of 100 ns. The presence of one stage significantly increases the potential efficiency of pulse-flaw detection due to a reduction in the time for examining the active part, a decrease in measurement errors, and the possibility of monitoring the state of the active part under operating voltage when the probing-pulse generator is connected through a PIN sensor of high-voltage input.
