Abstrakt: In this experimental research, the microcracking behaviour of modified concrete with three different water- cement ratios under uniaxial compression was studied by means of microscopic analyses. The ultimate purpose was to measure the initial defects either in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) or the matrix due to hydration shrinkage and their effects on the general microcracking behaviour of the modified concrete. Environmental temperature and humidity effects on the formation of initial cracks and the microcracking behaviour with and without silica fume were also studied. It was determined that the size and density of initial cracks either in the ITZ or the matrix have a considerable influence on the general microcracking behaviour of concrete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
